The forklift is a material handling device utilized to raise and move loads from one place to another. Each and every forklift part has a specific function. Different parts could be used to move the load vertically or horizontally.

Mast
The components utilized to lift and lower the load is called the forklift mast. There are various types of masts for lifting loads to different heights: quad, simplex, duplex and triplex.

Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: gas, electric, diesel and propane. The battery is located within the cab under the seat. The propane tank is on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on gas and diesel forklifts is under the back of the truck.

Cab
Situated within the center of the truck is the forklift cab. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the informational gauges and controls. The gas pedal, steering wheel, tilting controls, brake and lifting controls are all situated within the cab.

Frame
The frame of the truck carries all the largest components of the forklift, including the counterweights, which are located at the back in order to prevent the truck from tipping when loaded. The frame includes the overhead guard which protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the axles, wheels and driveshaft.
