Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric lift trucks should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging place. The path to the post must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow things such as matches or lighters to be used when somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method could release fumes. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
