History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in the year 1919. The company was originally established by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The initial name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling equipment. In the year 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into a global brand name in the succeeding years.
